Yuka Saso set to choose Japanese citizenship over Philippines

The Philippines will soon lose one of its finest golfers.

Yuka Saso – a golfer born in San Ildefonso, Bulacan to a Filipino mother and Japanese father – has chosen to represent Japan over the Philippines when she turns 22.

Japan requires its citizens who hold dual passport-holders by the age of 22 to pick choose citizenship.

“I chose Japan because of its nationality law,” the 20-year-old told a Japanese publication a day before her much-awaited one-off return to the Ladies Professional Golf Association of Japan return.

Saso has been carrying the flag of the Philippines in competing in the pro circuit.

Moreover, she was part of Team Pilipinas for numerous multi-sport events – including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

It was definitely a tough decision to make for Saso. She has bared numerous times that she would dread the day when she has to decide.

“Whatever happens in the future, I’m still Filipino and I’m still Japanese. I don’t want to choose because I’m both,” she said.

“Why choose, right?”
