Xavy Nunag exits UAAP post, pursues business ventures

Xavier “Xavy” Nunag, who has served as the UAAP Basketball Commissioner since Season 86, has officially submitted his resignation, effective April 18, 2025.

Nunag’s decision to step down comes as he shifts focus toward his other business endeavors.

“On behalf of the UAAP, we extend our deepest gratitude to Commissioner Xavy Nunag for his service to the league,” said UAAP Season 87 Treasurer Dolreich “Bo” Perasol of host school University of the Philippines.

“His leadership introduced meaningful innovations in our basketball officiating and tournament management, and we are truly thankful for the dedication and professionalism he brought to the role.”

Nunag’s involvement with the league began during UAAP Season 85 when he was appointed acting commissioner for the High School Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

His passion for the sport quickly earned him the nod as full-time basketball commissioner in Season 86, where he took charge of all divisions — from collegiate men’s and women’s games to junior high and high school tournaments.

Nunag’s approach to the role was rooted in transparency and elevating the standards of officiating.

His time as commissioner also saw the strengthening of the Basketball Commissioner’s Office, most notably through the support of two key deputies: Marvin Bienvenida, who handled the high school boys and junior high boys’ divisions, and Atty. Mariana Lopa, who was in charge of the collegiate women’s and high school girls’ competitions.

While Atty. Lopa has since stepped down earlier this year to pursue another path in her sports career with Nike Philippines, Bienvenida remains present in the league and has been named the acting basketball commissioner for the 3×3 basketball tournaments happening this May.

“It has been a pleasure working with Commissioners Xavy and Atty. Mariana. Their contributions have greatly elevated the standard of our basketball tournaments,” said UAAP Executive Director Atty. Rene Andrei “Rebo” Saguisag Jr.

“We are confident that Commissioner Marvin will continue the fine work they have started as we get ready for the 3×3 season. Maraming salamat.”
