Vanessa de Jesus and Duke were dealt a 55-77 loss at the hands of Virginia Tech to open their 2021-22 ACC Season, Friday morning (Manila time) at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Filipino-American sophomore Vanessa de Jesus logged 28 minutes in the contest, finishing with nine points on 4-of-11 shooting with four rebounds and an assist against five turnovers.
Duke was held without a field goal for a span of 7:54 – a stretch that began midway through the first quarter and lasted until the 6:52 mark of the second quarter. The Blue Devils fell behind by as many as 20 in the second quarter, struggling to find the bucket.
The Blue Devils cut the Virginia Tech lead to 13, 41-28, but the Hokies responded with a 12-0 run to build a 53-28 advantage that paved the way for the rout.
Elizabeth Balogun paced Duke with a season-high 22 points while Celeste Taylor scored all seven of her points in the fourth period.
This is just Duke’s second loss of the season while Virginia Tech went up to 10-3, 2-0 in ACC play.
Elizabeth Kitley led Virginia Tech with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
Duke will return home to Cameron Indoor Stadium to host No. 17 Notre Dame on Monday.
