V-League: Ybanez, De Vega rally UST from 0-2 hole, stuns FEU in quarters

University of Sto. Tomas crawled back from a 0-2 hole to turn back Far Eastern University in five sets, 19-25, 24-26, 25-21, 27-25, 15-13, in the quarterfinals of the 2022 V-League Men’s Collegiate Challenge, Wednesday at the Paco Arena.

Rey Miguel De Vera, who nailed the game-winning block for the Tiger Spikers, finished with 23 points on 21 attacks, an ace, and a block to go along with 18 excellent receptions while Josh Ybanez finished with 17 points on 14 attacks and three blocks on top of eight excellent digs.

UST used a four-to-nothing run in the final frame to tie the scores at 11-all before Ybanez and De Vega took over to finish off the match.

“Una, si God. Kasi ‘di niya kami pinabayaan yung mga bata. Kaming mga coaches, factor kami sa training pero sa court God at player na ang naglalaro so ayun, binigyan sila ng pagkakataon ng Diyos at minaterialize nila yun para makuha yung panalo,” said UST assistant coach Benjamin Mape.

Mark Calado’s 27-point outing went for naught as the Tamaraws bow out of the quarterfinals. Zhydryx Saavedra added 16 points for FEU.

UST will face Ateneo de Manila University on November 23, Wednesday at 5:00 PM in the semifinals while FEU will go up against De La Salle University in the classification phase earlier that day at 1:00 PM.
