Ateneo de Manila University made quick work of San Sebastian College-Recoletos, 25-19, 25-19, 25-14, to open its V-League Women’s Collegiate Challenge campaign on Wednesday at the Paco Arena.
Faith Nisperos unloaded 18 points off 11 attacks, six aces, and a block despite sitting out the second set of the Blue Eagles’ Pool A matchup against the Lady Stags which lasted for just an hour and 21 minutes.
Vanie Gandler chipped in 14 points while Lyann De Guzman and Joan Narit had 10 and eight points, respectively.
“We still have to polish many things kasi alam niyo naman Baste is a very good team but medyo lumamang lang kami ng konti diyan sa tao,” said Ateneo head coach Oliver Almadro.
“We are preparing for the more bigger games hindi lang dito sa liga kundi syempre in the UAAP so kailangan talaga naming mag-aral pa nang mag-aral nang mabuti. We really have to polish,” he added.
After taking the first two sets with ease, the Blue Eagles turned it up a notch in the third set and went on a massive 11-1 run capped off by five straight points from Nisperos which included four consecutive aces to take a 19-8 advantage.
Lyann De Guzman gave Ateneo its biggest lead at 12 after a kill, 22-10, before Gandler put on the finishing touches.
Leading San Sebastian was Kristine Dioniso with 12 points while Tina Marasigan and Kamille Tan had seven apiece.
Ateneo takes on fellow UAAP school Far Eastern University on Wednesday at 5:00 PM while San Sebastian looks to bounce back against Adamson University earlier that day at 1:00 PM.
