UST’s Requinton-Varga, FEU’s Garcia-Hadlocon remain on top


Reigning men’s titlist University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University remained perfect after posting contrasting wins in the UAAP Season 82 Men’s Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Sands SM By The Bay Wednesday.

The Tiger Spikers’ tandem of Jaron Requinton and Rancel Varga swept Adamson University’s Leo Miranda and Jesus Valdez, 21-18, 21-15. Meanwhile, the Tamaraws’ Jude Garcia and Kevin Hadlocon needed a strong deciding set to topple the Bulldogs’ James Buytrago and James Natividad, 21-19, 19-21, 15-11, in an intense duel of favorites.

UST and FEU, last season’s second placers, improved to 3-0.

University of the Philippines moved to solo third with a 2-1 mark after Nicolo Consuelo and rookie Louis Gamban swept Ateneo’s Abai Llenos and Kurt Aguilar, 22-20, 21-18.

After a winless opening day, De La Salle made a breakthrough, as Vince Maglinao and Ian Jumandos nipped University of the East’s Jake Abria and Lloyd Josafat, 21-19, 19-21, 15-5.

The Green Spikers forced a four-way tie at 1-2 along with the Bulldogs, the Falcons, and the Red Warriors. The Blue Eagles, meanwhile, are winless in three matches.

Action resumes on Saturday with eight matches, four in the morning and another four in the afternoon, starting at 8 a.m.
