UST grabs solo 1st in classic series against UP Lady Maroons

The UP Lady Maroons brought their immaculate record on the line against the UST Tigresses in the 1st women’s match-up of day 3. UST would go up 3-0 in the early match-ups but UP would rally back to force an all-important 7th match. The middle-heavyweight match ended controversially with Jane Narra defeating Cyrmyn Perlas 7-6.

Colleen Heria and Nicoele Sibug put on a barnburner-type of match to open the UP-UST series. Even with a splint on her dislocated finger, Sibug went toe-to-toe with Heria. The match would extend into the golden round with the match tied at 6-all. After much parrying from both lady jins, Colleen Heria scored with a successful body kick on Sibug to grab the golden point. Korina Paladin would rally back after being down in the 1st round with a 7-5 win over Charizza Alombro. National Team Jin Nicole Cham outclassed rookie Stephanie Osio in the bantamweight match 6-1 to give UST a comfortable 3-0 lead. Coach Dap Dagdagan would rally his troops on the sideline. Whatever Coach Dap said worked as Kristine Lozada scored 9 in the 1st round of her featherweight bout with Bianca Go that would be enough in a 9-7 win. Janin Marcaida dominated Zay Cajes in the lightweight bout with a comfortable 10 point margin, 18-8. Finally, Arriane Asegurado, after being down 5-1, would connect on an array of kicks to score 11 points in the second to win 12-8.

The middle-heavyweight match between Jane Narra and Cyrmyn Perlas did not disappoint. Perlas would be down 1-0 at the end of the 1st round. Perlas rallied back to tie the match 6-all with about a second remaining. However, Narra connected as the buzzer sounded to give UST the win 7-6. From Coach Dap’s viewpoint, it was alleged that the kick came after the referee had raised his hand. With no challenge cards remaining, Coach Dagdagan went to the commissioner’s table to state his case. Master Rocky Samson and other senior officials went to the back to review the tape. After an hour of deliberation, and as the replays showed, it was deemed that the Narra body kick came right before the clock hit zero. As a result, the UST Tigresses defeat the UP Lady Maroons 3-4.

As the Tigresses celebrated, a fallen Cyrmyn Perlas fell to her knees in disappointment. Team captains Nicoele Sibug and Charizza Alombro, and Coach Dagdagan comforted Perlas reminding her and the team that all is not over.
