UST Golden Shuttlers match-sweeps UE, keeps solo 4th place

In one of many match-sweeps during the day in the Men’s division, the UST Golden Shuttlers, John Paul Pantig and designated closer Alacaed Lee Sabanal, needed it the most to keep their top-3 hopes alive with a match-sweep of the Far Eastern University shuttlers in Saturday Badminton action.

In what will be the only game loss for the entire University of Santo Tomas team, John Mark Sotea would fall to Lorenz Gatpolintan in the 1st set of their match with a 19-21 score. Sotea would then take the next two games with scores of 21-16 and 21-17 to gain the point for the shuttlers from Espana.

Paul John Pantig won the first game of his match with a score of 21-14. During the 2nd game, Pantig would be relentless in his movement as Manlalangit had no answer for Pantig’s returns. The lead would go as high as 16-10 before Pantig would take the game 21-14.

The team of Patrique Magnaye and Matt Tungul swept both games in this match with scores of 21-15 and 21-19 to give the UST Golden Shuttlers the series win. Tungul led his he tandem with 25 registered points and an all-around performance on both ends.

Paul John Pantig, playing in his 2nd game for the day, rode the momentum he gained in his singles match to lead his team to pound the team of John Kenneth Cruz and Arman Manlalangit in two games with scores of 21-12 and 21-9. The UST pair would lead by as much as 12-3 just after the 11th point break in the first set. The UE tandem, clearly demoralized from the first game, would not fair any better in the 2nd set, registering only 9 points to lose the match-up.

Alacaed Lee Sabanal showed no mercy in his match against Benjamin Silva from the Warriors’ side as he would dispose of his opponent in less than 25 minutes of court action. Sabanal would beat Silva in straight games 21-10 and 21-8.
