UP transferee Israel Friday, 19, passes away after collapsing in practice

Former Centro Escolar University big man Israel Friday (September 6, 2005 – August 19, 2025) passed away on Tuesday after collapsing during the University of the Philippines’ basketball practice.

He was 19 years old.

Friday had recently transferred to UP and was serving his residency.

In a statement released by the school’s Office of Athletics and Sports Development, the 6-foot-10 Nigerian collapsed in the middle of practice and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead.

UP said it is in close coordination with his family and is extending its full support during this difficult time.

The exact cause of Friday’s death has yet to be determined.

The university has also appealed for privacy for his family as they grieve this tragic loss.

During the seventh season of the UCAL, Friday averaged 19.4 points, 16.4 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game, establishing himself as one of the most dominant players in the league.
