John Paul Mendy delivered another stellar performance as University of Batangas kept its semifinal hopes alive with a commanding 100-71 victory over the Philippine Women’s University on Monday in the UCAL-PGFlex Linoleum 7th Season at the Paco Arena in Manila.
One of several foreign student-athletes in the 10-team league, the 6-foot-8 Mendy was nearly unstoppable in the paint, pouring in 32 points on an efficient 12-of-16 shooting from the field.
Most of his production came in the first two quarters, where the Brahmans surged to a comfortable 55-35 halftime lead.
The Brahmans showed no signs of slowing down, outscoring the struggling Patriots 30-11 in the final period to wrap up the two-round eliminations with an 8-5 record.
This result put them in a tie with host Diliman College, Manila Central University, Immaculada Concepcion College, and defending champion Centro Escolar University.
The CEU Scorpions complicated the semifinal race even further by overpowering the ICC Bluehawks, 96-79, in the second game of the day.
CEU’s Israel Friday was equally impressive, recording a remarkable 42 points and 29 rebounds in what could be remembered as one of the most dominant individual performances in recent years. His standout effort kept CEU’s postseason hopes alive.
Mendy also completed a double-double by grabbing 12 rebounds while adding two assists.
Three other UB players scored in double figures, with Ryan Briones contributing 18 points.
The final playoff picture will be determined after the conclusion of the second phase of eliminations on Saturday.
