SBP Coaches Academy head Jong Uichico will be making his return to the national team as he will be part of Gilas Pilipinas’ staff for the second window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
Uichico, 58, was part of Gilas’ staff during the 2019 Southeast Asian Games as part of Tim Cone’s think tank.
The last time he was head coach of the national team was during the 2017 SEA Games.
Also part of the staff are Gilas Pilipinas program director Tab Baldwin and Boyet Fernandez.
Baldwin is of course the architect of this squad.
Fernandez, on the other hand, will be making his Gilas debut.
The 49-year-old tactician of San Beda is a four-time NCAA champion coach and six-time champion in the PBA D-League.
Completing the staff are Alton Lister, Sandro Soriano, and Andrei Tolentino.
The 16-man Gilas pool is currently at Inspire Academy in Calamba, Laguna for a training camp.
The Philippines will face Thailand on the 26th, South Korea on the 28th, and Thailand again on the 30th.
Gilas is currently 1-0 in Pool A of the Qualifiers.
