Lady Spikers snap Lady Bulldogs’ perfect start

After an uncharacteristic straight-set loss last Wednesday, the De La Salle University Lady Spikers showed their championship poise by sweeping the then-undefeated National University Lady Bulldogs, 27-25, 25-16, 25-21, at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

NU started out matching the Lady Spikers point-for-point through the efforts of the towering Jaja Santiago. The Lady Bulldogs broke away, leading 23-22, but surrendered errors down the stretch, culminating in back-to-back miscues to hand La Salle the early lead.

From there, the Lady Bulldogs seemed to lose steam as their reception and floor defense never recovered. They gave up 33 unforced errors to La Salle’s 22. The Lady Spikers also tallied 14 serve aces to NU’s 5 and nine blocks to NU’s one.

Tin Tiamzon led the Lady Spikers with 17 points, while middle blocker Aduke Ogunsanya had her best game with 11 points.

La Salle (3-1) next face the Adamson University Lady Falcons (0-4) on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Santiago finished with 13 points, eight points below her 21-point per game average. Aiko Urdas added eight markers.

NU (3-1) take on the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws (2-2) on Saturday also at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
