UAAP POW Shaina Nitura shrugs off historic numbers: ‘Ang goal po, manalo’

Shaina Nitura isn’t just rewriting the record books — she’s rewriting Adamson’s season.

With her back against the wall and her team’s Final Four hopes hanging by a thread, the rookie-captain of the Lady Falcons rose above the pressure and delivered performances that shook the league, proved her worth, and reminded everyone that stars aren’t born — they’re built through adversity.

She outshone MVP contenders and potential Final Four rivals this week, earning her the Collegiate Press Corps’ UAAP Player of the Week honor for April 2 to 6.

The 20-year-old rookie made history by recording back-to-back 30-point games — her fourth such performance in 11 matches this season, the most ever by any player in a single UAAP women’s volleyball season.

Her latest standout showing came in a near triple-double effort, where she tallied 36 points, 11 digs, and nine receptions in a hard-fought five-set loss to UST, 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 7-25, 15-8.

She followed that up by leading Adamson to their biggest win of the season — a four-set stunner over defending champion National University and reigning MVP Bella Belen, 25-23, 15-25, 28-26, 25-22.

That victory kept the Lady Falcons’ Final Four hopes alive, halting a six-game skid that nearly pushed them out of the playoff picture.

Despite her record-breaking performances, Nitura remains grounded and focused only on what truly matters: winning.

“‘Di ko po talaga siya pinapansin [yung records]. Hindi ko po ‘yun masyado nilalagay sa utak ko at sa heart ko. Hindi naman po ‘yun ‘yung goal dahil ‘yung goal po, manalo,” said Nitura, who edged out La Salle’s Angel Canino and Mikole Reyes, UST’s Angge Poyos and Cassie Carballo, and FEU’s Faida Bakanke for the weekly citation, backed by minor sponsors Discovery Suites and World Balance.

“Sobrang nakatulong po yung past games namin na puro nga kami talo kasi pinapatibay talaga kami and mas nagugutom sa panalo. Lagi kami china-challenge na ‘ito lang ba talaga kami’ o ‘hahayaan ba namin na mag-continue ito.”
