From a former record-holder to the new record-breaker, Angge Poyos expressed her admiration for Adamson University’s sensational rookie, Shaina Nitura.
Nitura wasted no time making an impact for the Lady Falcons, erupting for 33 points in her collegiate debut — a new UAAP women’s volleyball rookie record — in a thrilling reverse sweep victory over Ateneo de Manila University.
She surpassed the previous mark of 31 points set by Poyos in Season 86 when she led the University of Santo Tomas to a 22-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-20 win against Adamson.
Not stopping there, Nitura later shattered the UAAP women’s record for the most points scored in a single game, firing 38 markers in a five-set loss to the University of the Philippines.
On Wednesday night, Poyos had a front-row seat to Nitura’s scoring prowess.
The Adamson star delivered another monster performance, tallying 36 points on 32-of-104 attacks, three blocks, and an ace. However, it wasn’t enough to stop Poyos and UST from pulling off a gritty 25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 15-8 win at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Kay Shai, very proud lang ako sa kanya kasi nagagawa niya yung ganung puntos, naka-36. Tiyagaan niya pa at wag sumuko. Patience lang talaga inside the court… Kudos lang din talaga sa kanya kasi sinasabi nga buhatera siya,” said Poyos of Nitura, whom she has faced since high school.
“Sa match-up naman namin, sobrang ganda, and thankful kami na nakuha namin yung panalo this game at naputol namin ‘yung three-game losing streak namin,” added the Season 86 Rookie of the Year.
“Since high school, magaling talaga siya na player. Look forward ko lang na maging healthy siya at ako rin kasi siyempre marami kaming future games na maghaharap kaming dalawa.”
Poyos made sure to leave her mark as well, unleashing 27 points on 25-of-68 attacks while adding 15 excellent receptions.
The win was crucial for the Golden Tigresses, snapping their three-game skid and improving their record to 6-4, tying Far Eastern University for third place. They now hold a one-game lead over the fifth-seeded University of the Philippines (5-5).
Up next for UST is a showdown against the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Saturday at the Big Dome.
“Yung losing streak namin, sabi nga ni coach, medyo bumaba yung morale. Sinimulan lang namin sa training, nagtiwala lang kami sa coaches, at siyempre, personally, naniwala lang ako sa teammates ko na kaya namang mag-bounce back at kaya naming bumawi from the three-game losing streak,” said Poyos.
