When the stakes were highest, Ariel Cacao rose even higher.
The steady-handed setter was the engine behind Far Eastern University’s dominant finish in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball eliminations, steering the Tamaraws to the No. 1 seed and earning well-deserved recognition along the way.
For his pivotal role in guiding FEU to an unbeaten run, Cacao was named the Collegiate Press Corps’ UAAP Player of the Week, presented by the Philippine Sports Commission, for the period of April 23 to 27.
Cacao played a crucial role in FEU’s four-set drubbing of the DLSU Green Spikers last Saturday.
The crafty setter tossed 29 excellent sets against La Salle, showcasing his brilliance ahead of their Final Four rematch. He also chipped in a point off an attack to cap off his standout performance.
Cacao edged out teammate Dryx Saavedra, NU’s Jade Disquitado, UST’s Josh Ybañez, and La Salle’s Noel Kampton for the citation, which is supported by minor sponsors Discovery Suites and World Balance.
Thanks to Cacao’s steady playmaking, FEU improved its record to 13-1, clinching the top seed for the second consecutive year in the men’s tournament.
However, despite their lofty standing and the twice-to-beat advantage in the next round, FEU head coach Eddieson Orcullo is keeping the team’s excitement in check, especially with a dangerous Green Spikers squad looming.
“Sa amin, siguro ganun kami ka-excited na papasok ngayong week, kung paano namin ipe-peprepare ang sarili namin para dun sa semis. ‘Yung 13-1 na standing, ano nga yan e, it does not count. Wala na ‘yun. Kumbaga, 0-0 na ulit,” Orcullo said.
“Dun kami ulit manggagaling ulit ngayon.”
