Ateneo de Manila University dominated Adamson University in straight sets, 25-13, 25-17, 25-21, to end its UAAP Season 86 Women’s Volleyball run on a high note, Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
The Blue Eagles finished with a 5-9 record, securing fifth place – an improvement from their 4-10, sixth-place finish last season.
“I’m so happy because this is our last match and the team played very well,” said Ateneo head coach Sergio Veloso.
“We cannot progress further, but we maintained our position in fifth place, which is better than last year,” noted the Brazilian head coach who replaced Oliver Almadro during the off-season.
After the lopsided first two sets, the Lady Falcons displayed a better performance in the third frame. They trailed by just a point late, 19-20, after a solid block by Shar Ancheta on Lyann De Guzman.
However, AC Miner and De Guzman linked up for a strong finishing kick, securing the Ateneo triumph in 91 minutes.
De Guzman, who is still contemplating whether she will return next year, logged a game-high 14 points. Meanwhile, Sobe Buena and Geezel Tsunashima provided support with eight and seven, respectively.
The Blue Eagles also capitalized on the 32 errors made by their opponents.
No player for Adamson reached at least five points, with Barbie Jamili, Ancheta, May Ann Nuique, Ishie Lalongisip, and Red Bascon all finishing with four each.
The Lady Falcons finished with a 3-11 record, currently in sixth place.
On the other hand, University of the East can force a tie if it wins over University of the Philippines on Saturday.
This was captain-libero Roma Mae Doromal’s final game wearing the blue and white of Ateneo.
Meanwhile, Lucille Almonte and Karen Verdeflor also played their last games in Adamson uniforms.
