UAAP 85 WVB: Kate Santiago, Adamson make quick work of UP for bounce back win

ADAMSON University ended the first round of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on a positive note by defeating University of the Philippines, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23, on Wednesday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

In the third set, with Adamson leading 23-22, Steph Bustrillo made a costly error but quickly made up for it with a down-the-line kill to keep UP alive at 23-24.

However, Kate Santiago went off-the-block to secure the win for Adamson.

“After the first round, we did our job. We were able to get the games that we needed to win. I think our placing is okay,” said head coach Jerry Yee.

The Lady Falcons tied for third place with University of Santo Tomas, both with identical 5-2 records.

Santiago was outstanding for Adamson, scoring 16 points on 12 attacks, three blocks, and a service ace.

Louie Romero made 18 excellent sets, utilizing all 14 players on the team.

Trisha Tubu contributed seven points, Lorene Toring dropped six, and Lucille Almonte and Rizza Cruz each scored five.

Meanwhile, the Fighting Maroons suffered their fourth straight defeat, falling to seventh place with a 1-6 record, just ahead of the winless University of the East.

Alyssa Bertolano came off the bench for the second straight game and had a team-high 12 points for UP.

Bustrillo and Abi Goc both scored eight points, with Goc also getting six digs and five excellent receptions.
