UAAP 85 WBB: Tacatac drops 27 as UST dims UE with 63-point whipping

University of Santo Tomas rolled past University of the East via a 63-point rout, 107-44, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s basketball tournament, Sunday at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Tacky Tacatac bounced back hard after a subpar game in their last match, going for 27 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

“We had a very slow start nung first quarter and I just told the girls na medyo tight sila noon. Our defense nung second quarter started na medyo nahirapan ‘yung UE,” said Growling Tigresses head coach Haydee Ong.

The Lady Warriors kept in step with UST in the first quarter, trailing by just three, 15-18.

But it was all Growling Tigresses after that, unfurling a 34-11 second period to establish a 26-point lead at the half, 52-26, before extending it to 41 at the end of third, 74-33.

Eka Soriano flirted with a quadruple-double with 20 points, eight assists, eight steals, and seven rebounds for UST.

Brigette Santos had 12 points, nine assists, and six steals, while Rachel Ambos and Nikki Villasin got 12 and 11 points, respectively, with the former grabbing 11 rebounds.

The Growling Tigresses rose to 4-1, tied with De La Salle University at the second spot, while UE stayed winless in five games.

UST forced 50 turnovers off the Lady Warriors, getting 51 points off those with Pauline Anastacio and Joyce Terrinal committing 11 errors each.

Anastacio, along with Althea Lorena, Claire Sajol, and Kamba Kone paced UE with eight points each.

UST will be back home on Wednesday at the Quadricentennial Pavilion when it battles Far Eastern University, while the Lady Warriors go against University of the Philippines.
