UAAP 85 WCH: Mordido-led NU takes top spot despite 2-2 split against UST

Defending champion National University was held to a 2-2 draw by University of Sto. Tomas but still managed to take leadership after accumulating 8.5 points after Round 4 of the UAAP Season 85 Women’s Chess Championships, Saturday at FEU Tech Gym in Manila.

Woman International Master Kylen Joy Mordido remained undefeated after scoring her third win in as many matches across Rohanisah Buto in Board 3 while Woman Fide Master Allaney Jia Doroy bounced back from her Round 3 mishap to score a win over Josemier Jene Panol in Board 2.

Maycydel Fajardo (Board 1) and Jamaica Marie Lagrio (Board 4) took the wins for UST for the 2-2 split and helped Tigresses take the second spot in the standings with 8.5 points in four season matches.

Adamson University returned to action in Round 4 and avenged their shutout loss in Round 2 with a dominant 3-1 victory over powerhouse Far Eastern University.

Robelle De Jesus sparked the momentum for Adamson as she stopped Me Ann Joy Baclayon, who came off a rousing victory over Season 84 Rookie-of-the-Year and MVP Doroy in Round 3, for a crucial win in the top board.

Queenie Mae Samarita (Board 3) and Bonalyn Ordinido (Board 4) then delivered the upset wins for Adamson with separate conquests of Woman National Master Rizalyn Tejada and Arena Candidate Master Wena Escalicas, respectively.

Woman National Master Bea Mendoza was the lone bright spot for FEU after taking down Jashua Patria in Board 2.

De La Salle University also tallied their first-ever season match win after a 2.5-1.5 conquest of University of the Philippines.
