Far Eastern University showed its composure in the first two sets before romping University of the Philippines in the third, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15, in the UAAP Season 85 men’s volleyball tournament at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, Sunday.
Zhydryx Saavedera delivered in his first game in the premier collegiate league with 15 points on 14 attacks. Martin Bugaoan added 11 points including three blocks.
Mark Calado got 10 points, while Jefferson Abuniawan had eight points, half coming off service aces.
“Lagi ko lang sinasabi ‘Emotions! Oh na-feel niyo na, okay na? Pwede na tayong bumalik ulit sa ineensayo natin?’ which is maganda naman ‘yung response ng team,” said FEU head coach Rei Diaz on the first two periods.
Knotted at 23 in the second, the Tamaraws displayed its might with a Jayjay Javelona off-the-block kill and a Mark Calado block on Louis Gamban.
FEU then just blew the game wide open in the third frame with a 14-7 start en route to the 10-point clincher.
“Magandang simula. Ang goal ay sana masustain pa namin kasi alam naman natin mahaba ang UAAP,” added Diaz.
Angelo Lagando was a one-man show for the Fighting Maroons with 17 points on 15 spikes and two block kills.
Team captain Louis Gamban was limited to just seven points.
Up next for FEU will be University of Santo Tomas on Wednesday at 4:00 PM at the Philsports Arena. Meanwhile, UP meets De La Salle University at 12:00 NN.
