De La Salle-Santiago Zobel School and University of Santo Tomas completed first round sweeps in the boys’ and girls’ divisions, respectively, of the UAAP Season 85 High School Table Tennis Tournament, Monday at the Makati Coliseum.
The two schools battled it out for leadership in the two divisions with the Zobel Junior Green Paddlers and the UST Junior Lady Paddlers prevailing over their opponents.
DLSZ came from a match down to take a 3-1 win over UST with Emmanuel Yamson taking the second singles match, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8, over Lawrence Melendez.
Andrei Villacruel then bagged the tie with a win over Jhiven Clamucha in a marathon, 11-8, 11-6, 5-11, 14-16, 11-5, to complete the first-round sweep.
On the girls’ side, UST’s Trwxiemay Alarcon blasted Blessy Cayao of DLSZ, 11-1, 11-2, 11-2, in the deciding singles match after both squads split the first four matches.
UST led 2-0, but Zobel made a comeback after Janna Paculba leveled the tie in the third singles rubber over J-An Sanchez, 11-9, 13-11, 13-11.
University of the East and Adamson University round up the top three after the first round in the boys’ and girls’ divisions, respectively.
