Adamson University emerged as the leader to open the UAAP Season 85 High School Boys’ Athletics Championships, late Wednesday night at the Philsports Oval in Pasig City.
Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas started to take control of the girls’ side in the five-day meet over its closest pursuer University of the East, taking a 103-89 lead.
Baby Falcon Kent Jardin paced Adamson to 124 points, thanks to his two golds in the triple jump and the 100 meters.
Jardin won the triple jump with a new UAAP mark of 14.15 meters, breaking the previous 13.73 set by UE’s Edie Garbin in UAAP Season 81, before dashing to the 100-m gold with 11.18 seconds.
Adamson also got two more titles in the 5000-m walk and the 800 meters from John Yuri Jumaday with 27:49.26 minutes and John Mark Martin with 2:01.33, respectively.
University of the East’s Chino Balmores got the other gold of the day with a heave of 35.79 meters in the discus throw to put the Junior Warriors at 76 points, just two points behind UST’s 78.
Ateneo High School currently stands in fourth place in the boys’ division with 11 markers.
On the other hand, the Jr. Female Tiger Tracksters leaned on the track events to keep some distance over the Junior Lady Warriors to end the day with 103 points against the latter’s 89.
Christine Guergio put UST on top in the 100 meters with 13.00 seconds over teammate Lyka Miravalles’ 13.08, while Fiona Tolentino fended off UE’s Jyzel Gabriel to take the 800 meters with 2:32.09.
UE earlier started on the right track by sweeping the podium in the hammer throw with Jazen Arano leading the way with a throw of 31.52 meters, way ahead of fellow Junior Lady Warriors Alayannah Rico’s 26.60 and Louise Manangan’s 25.19.
Adamson is in third place after Day 1 with 37 points.
The championships for the high school division continue at the same Pasig venue starting with the continuation of the boys’ decathlon on Thursday.
