Far Eastern University-Diliman did not let up with its UAAP Season 85 Boys Basketball Finals hopes on the line, ending National University Nazareth School’s reign and nine-season Finals streak with a sweet 71-65 victory, Friday at Filoil Ecooil Centre.
FEU-Diliman’s defense was the key to their success, as they were able to hold off the Bullpups’ late-game surge.
Jedrick Solomon’s lay-up cut the deficit to just five points, but the Baby Tamaraws held their nerve and secured the win.
Coach Allan Albano was ecstatic with his team’s performance, saying, “Congratulations sa mga boys na hindi bumigay sa game na ito.”
The victory was especially sweet for the Baby Tamaraws, as they advanced to the title round for the second straight season.
FEU-Diliman’s Kirby Mongcopa had an outstanding game, scoring 15 points and grabbing 16 rebounds to go along with five blocks. Jedric Daa also contributed 15 points, eight boards, and three assists for the Baby Tamaraws.
On the other hand, it was Reinhard Jumamoy’s final game for the Bullpups, and he gave it his all, scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds while recording six steals and two assists.
NUNS coach Kevin de Castro paid tribute to FEU-Diliman, saying, “Hats off to FEU.”
The Baby Tamaraws will now face Adamson University in the best-of-three finale on Tuesday at the San Juan Arena.
