Tim Cone: Gilas to welcome QMB if FIBA clearance is confirmed

Tim Cone and the rest of Gilas Pilipinas were preparing for their flight back home when news emerged early Friday morning (Manila time) that could affect the program in the long term.

Quentin Millora-Brown’s legal team successfully proved to FIBA that the 6-foot-10 Filipino-American had obtained his Philippine passport before turning 16.

The development was reported by Spin’s Homer Sayson.

In a message to Tiebreaker Times, Cone said he had not yet heard from the federation regarding the update, but it would certainly help Gilas moving forward if true.

“I haven’t heard that, but if that is the case, we would certainly welcome him,” said the winningest coach in PBA history.

The 24-year-old, who played one year with the University of the Philippines during UAAP Season 87, expressed confidence about his case.

“I feel really confident. But again, I can’t speak too much about it. I’m not a lawyer — I don’t know all the details of the case. But they tell me we’re in a strong position, and I trust them,” he said during Gilas’ friendly against Hong Kong and Macau last July 28.

This development comes ahead of the FIBA World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, which begin in November.

The Philippines is grouped with Guam, New Zealand, and Australia in the qualifiers.

The possibility of Millora-Brown joining Kai Sotto and AJ Edu in the Gilas frontline is now closer to becoming reality.
