Sydney Sy Tancontian is an Asian Champion once more.
The 22-year-old captured the 2022 Asian Sambo Championships title in the women’s sports sambo over-80 kg after edging out Arailym Abenova of Kazakhstan, 1-0, in the final, Saturday at the Bouddha Sports Center in Jounieh, Lebanon.
This is Sy-Tancontian’s second continental title after winning the Asian Junior gold in 2019 in the same event in Mongolia.
The University of Santo Tomas student-athlete earlier took down Maksuda Egemberdiyeva of Turkmenistan in the semifinals.
“Winning in a competition where rated World athletes lurk around is something worth celebrating. Sydney’s triumph reflects the programs of Pilipinas Sambo that are exceptionally supported by the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission. I take pride in nurturing my children to their highest potential,” said Pilipinas Sambo president and Sydney’s father Paolo Tancontian.
Sy-Tancontian participated just last month in the 31st Southeast Asian Games, bagging silver in women’s over-87 kg in kurash.
