Spikers Turf: Umandal-powered Cotabato torch NU-Archipelago in return

Jau Umandal powered the returning AMC-Cotabato to a dominant sweep of National University-Archipelago Builders, 25-23, 25-15, 25-20, in the 2023 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at the Paco Arena.

Umandal dropped 20 points on 16 attacks and four service aces to help the Cotabato Spikers keep their unbeaten status and move up to the third spot tied with Iloilo through identical 4-0 records. He also had 12 excellent receptions and six excellent digs across his name.

Wewe Medina converted 10 attacks for 11 points while Madz Gampong and Rex Intal contributed seven points each in the victory.

Cian Silang had 12 excellent sets while libero Vince Lorenzo collected eight receptions and six digs for Cotabato.

Malaki yung improvement ng team. Maganda yung improvement at the same time medyo konti pang polishing. Medyo rough pa yung execution namin,” said assistant coach Benjamin Mape.

“Improve pa namin yung blocking namin tapos yung errors, minimize yung errors, at the same time yung defense improve namin para mas maganda yung preparation,” he added.

Jan Abanilla was the lone bright spot for the 0-5 Volley Builders with 11 points on five attacks, four blocks, and two aces to go along with six excellent digs and five excellent receptions.

Cotabato will take on the powerhouse Imus-Ivy Tuason Photography on Friday at 3:00 PM while NU will go up against Philippine Army on Sunday at 12:30 PM.
