Coming off an outstanding Game 1 outing that saw them decimate the San Miguel Beermen by 28 points, the Barangay Ginebra San Miguel were expected to sustain that momentum two days later.
Instead, the Gin Kings were handed a tasteof their own medicine.
Ginebra started flat, much to the dismay of Ginebra icon Sonny Jaworski, who was in attendance to watch the contest.
Jaworski, 13-time PBA champion, questioned the lack of desire the Gin Kings showed all throughout the game that saw them lag behind by as much as 31 points.
“In this Finals, there’s a word called ‘desire’. If you don’t have that, you won’t make it as champions! That’s it! No other word,” Jaworski rued after Ginebra were handed a 134-109 beatdown.
“If you have the desire, go for it right?”
Unlike in Game 1 – where Ginebra came out firing all cylinders, to the tune of a high 61.4 percent shooting clip – the Gin Kings slumped in Game 2, settling for jumpers all throughout the game.
For Jaworski, who did not enter Ginebra’s dugout for the day, the Gin Kings lacked the mental toughness to overcome San Miguel’s strong start.
“They won one pero malayo pa. Atsaka yung mental toughness nila should come into play, but if you only think of yourself then you ruin the team’s objective,” he said.
“I’m sure that they prepared, but preparations will fall apart if you or a couple of guys are out of focus,” the PBA legend added.
“That’s why I speak of the word mental toughness and we have to be focused on what you are supposed to do in the best possible way.”
Still, Jaworski remains confident that Ginebra will bounce back from this horrendous outing.
“Obviously I want them to win but as I said, if you want it, you have to be strong. “
