In just her first game playing for the Laoag City Power Smashers, ace scorer Grethcel Soltones is already making waves for her newfound home.
The reigning 2016 Open Conference Most Valuable Player starred for Laoag City, producing 13 points — all from attacks — to lead the squad to their first win against the Coast Guard in three sets.
Soltones, however, pointed out that she still has to make herself more comfortable with the new system that Laoag play with.
“Siyempre may kaunting adjustments pa rin,” Soltones told reporters post-match. “Ngayon ko lang din kasi nakasama yun iba.”
The San Sebastian stalwart also admitted that she still has to blend well with the setting style of Laoag floor general and veteran Chie Saet.
“Problema ko po yung adjustment sa set niya. Kumbaga hindi pa kami masyado nagkakatugma,” she stressed.
Despite being a newcomer in the stacked roster, the Lady Stag does not see any problem with her and her teammates as far as chemistry is concerned.
“Masaya lang kaming naglalaro, kasi halos same age [lang kami],” said the 5’6″ hitter.
Although her addition brings depth to the Laoag squad, Soltones still downplayed expectations regarding how deep the Power Smashers will go into the import-laden conference.
“Gagawin lang namin yung makakaya namin,” said Soltones.
“Wala kaming expectations this conference. Basta we wil do our best in every game.”
But still, according to Soltones, one of Laoag’s main goals is to crack into the Final Four phase even without foreign reinforcements leading their way.
“Ang gusto lang namin is maka-abot ng Final Four. Basta push pa rin kung hanggang saan namin kaya as a team.”
