June Mar Fajardo continues to re-write the history books
The San Miguel Beermen star is set to win the 2018 Philippine Cup’s Best Player of the Conference crown. As soon as the plum is handed over to him, he’ll bag his sixth BPC award — the most in the league’s history.
Moreover, Fajardo will also surpass PBA legend and all-time great Danny Ildefonso — his former teammate and his mentor, as he’d helped the 6-foot-10 slotman become the dreaded Kraken that he is today.
Not bad for some one who is just 28 years young.
Still, Fajardo continues to look back in order to move forward.
“Sino mage-expect non, ‘di ba? Ano lang ba naman ako dati,” recalled the six-year PBA pro.
“Wala akong hilig sa basketball, tapos ngayon mabe-break ko na yung record ng mga magagaling sa PBA. Nakaka-proud sa sarili,” added the pride of Pinamungajan, Cebu.
Fajardo leads his contemporaries in the BPC race by a wide margin, as he has earned 44.2 statistical points after averaging 22.9 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks through the semifinals.
But it would not have been made possible without the patience of his coaches and the trust of his teammates.
“Siyempre dahil din yun sa mga teammates ko, at sa coaching staff — di ko naman makukuha yun kung di dahil sa kanila,” expressed Fajardo.
“Para sa’kin, ‘di lang ako yung BPC. Kaming lahat.”
Even with yet another historic feat afoot, the five-time champion’s sights are still locked on one thing: helping the Beermen secure their fourth straight Philippine Cup championship to become the first-ever team to achieve that fear.
“Goal namin mag-champion,” said Fajardo.
“Kung maipanalo, sobrang blessed.”
