Sean Anthony added another major award to his collection after finally getting his 2019 PBA Defensive Player of the Year plum at the virtual PBA Press Corps Annual Awards Night Sunday at the TV5 Media Center.
This now completes the achievements he received in the 2019 season. Back then, he earned his first-ever Mythical First Team selection, plus a place in the All-Defensive team.
Anthony averaged 16.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.4 steals in that year. He played a key role in a season to remember for the Batang Pier.
They finished as the no. 2 seed in the Commissioner’s Cup, and came inches away from upending powerhouse team San Miguel in the quarters. They later made it to the semifinals in the Governors’ Cup.
There, NorthPort became just the fourth no. 8 team in league history to take down the top seed. It beat NLEX in the quarters to reach the semis — just the franchise’s second trip in team history.
This marks the first time that Anthony has won the award, which has the likes of Chris Ross, June Mar Fajardo, Marc Pingris, Chris Jackson, Freddie Abuda, Gabe Norwood, among others, as its past recipients.
Jackson and Pingris are the only players to have three DPoY awards. Meanwhile, Ross, Abuda, Wynne Arboleda, and Arwind Santos have two each.
