San Sebastian College-Recoletos decided not to renew the partnership it had with Egay Macaraya when his contract expired on December 30.
Multiple sources closely monitoring the situation have told Tiebreaker Times that the school has tapped John Kallos to be the new head coach of the Golden Stags for NCAA Season 99.
Macaraya was the head coach of the Stags since NCAA Season 92.
During his time there, Macaraya accumulated a 46-56 record, making it to the Final Four twice. His best finishes in the NCAA were a couple of fourth place finishes in Seasons 93 and 95.
San Sebastian failed to make it to the Final Four in both seasons 97 and 98, finishing eighth with a 3-6 record in the first season of 2022 before tallying an 8-10 record last season.
He will be replaced by Kallos, who was a former head coach in the UAAP and the MPBL.
Back in UAAP Season 80, Kallos had a one-year stint with Adamson University’s women’s basketball team when he replaced Mike Fermin.
Kallos steered Adamson to a 6-8 record for a fifth place finish.
He then had stints with Caloocan and, later on, Sarangani in the MPBL.
During the MPBL’s fourth season, Kallos guided the Marlins to a 16-5 record for third seed in the South.
However, Sarangani fell to lower seed Rizal-Xentro Mall in the quarters via a two-game sweep.
Kallos inherits a San Sebastian team that still has the quartet of Jessie Sumoda, Rommel Calahat, Kenneth Villapando, and Rhinwill Yambing.
