June Mar Fajardo will undergo scanning after suffering an apparent calf injury during San Miguel’s eventual loss to Barangay Ginebra in Game 1 of their PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup semifinals on Wednesday night.
The eight-time MVP will get checked by a specialist on Tuesday after aggravating a lingering issue for some time now.
“May ultrasound ako bukas, so bukas malalaman,” he told reporters moments after their 73-71 meltdown at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.
Fajardo hurt his right calf at the 8:38-mark of the fourth quarter after landing from an attempt to clean up his own miss from point-blank range.
The 6-foot-10 slotman immediately ran away from further contact and was visibly in pain as he hobbled on the way back to the bench.
He was subsequently subbed out by the coaches, and it came at a challenging time as the Kings were in the midst of a furious comeback from 18 down.
Fajardo managed to play through it, though, as he came back into the match with 4:11 remaining, checking in for Rodney Brondial.
He even tried to save his side down the stretch when their foes got the lead, but was ultimately denied by Japeth Aguilar with 8.1 seconds left.
SMB bowed, but the fact that he was able to return to the game makes the 35-year-old feel a sense of optimism that he sustained nothing serious.
“Medyo masakit eh. Pero, ‘yun nga, positive ako na wala masyadong ano. Sana hindi seryoso,” said Fajardo, who only scored six points but had 19 rebounds.
Still, it remains to be seen if he’d be able to suit up for Game 2 on Friday, June 27, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
There, the traditional contenders will look to avoid falling to a 0-2 deficit in the race-to-four series.
