Behind Cesca Racraquin, San Beda University bucked a slow start, stifling the challenge of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 25-17, in the NCAA Season 95 Women’s Volleyball Tournament, Friday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Racraquin was dominant in both offense and defense as she finished with 22 points on 17 attacks and three each of blocks and service aces. The captain also produced 23 digs and seven excellent receptions.
Last year’s Rookie of the Year Lynne Matias provided the steady playmaking, ending with 22 excellent sets that led to the Lady Red Spikers’ 46 spikes.
San Beda, however, coughed up 32 errors and the Lady Knights capitalized on those blunders to keep themselves in the match, even snatching that tight opening frame.
The Lady Red Spikers went to 3-0 with the win while dropping the Lady Knights to 0-3.
“Medyo slow start yung mga bata,” Lady Red Spikers head coach Nemesio Gavino Jr. lamented. “Nung na-aware na sila na natatalo na kami ayan bumawi.”
Letran started strong in the third set at 7-3, forcing Gavino to call for time and make some changes to eventually grab the third set.
“Kailangang magpalit ng tao, ng players. Yung pinalit ko naman nagdeliver so maganda yung naging resulta,” he continued.
Chamberlaine Cunada ended with 17 markers on 15 attacks and two aces, and, like Racraquin, also did her job on the floor with 21 digs and 10 excellent receptions.
San Beda will take on fellow unbeaten team Arellano University (3-0) will square off on Monday, January 27 at 12 p.m. Letran will try to bounce back against Mapua University (1-1) on Wednesday, January 29 at 2 p.m.
