Sam Catantan goes undefeated in Penn State debut


Samantha Catantan had a rousing NCAA Division I debut for Penn State as she went undefeated in the Ohio State Invitational in Columbus, Sunday (Manila time).

The fencer out of University of the East defeated her counterparts from Duke and North Carolina, going 7-2 in women’s foil.

Overall, Penn State defeated Duke, 15-12, and North Carolina, 19-8.

However, the Nittany Lions bowed to Notre Dame — a series Catantan sat out — 7-20.

Catantan’s teammates Kateryna Chorniy and Axelle Wasiak of epee; and Lodovica Bicego of foil also won against North Carolina.

Saber’s Zara Moss went 3-0 against Duke.

Competition continues on Monday, 12MN (Manila time).
