Team Pilipinas’ contingent for the Tokyo Olympics added one more member.
Cris Nievarez punched his ticket to the men’s single sculls event of the global meet. The Philippine Rowing Association announced, Monday morning.
Just last week, Nievarez finished at ninth overall during the 2021 Asia Oceania Olympic and Paralympic Rowing Qualification Regatta.
But during the Regatta, Japan won four events in the regatta but already has qualified for two events by virtue of being host.
India, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam qualified for the Olympics via the event but Hong Kong and Indonesia also punched their ticket through the world rankings.
A country however can only join one of the events thus the 20-year-old Nievarez’s qualification.
Nievarez joins weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz; boxing flyweight Carlo Paalam, middleweight Eumir Marcial, flyweight Irish Magno, featherweight Nesthy Petecio, gymnast Caloy Yulo; and pole vaulter EJ Obiena for the global meet set from July 24 to August 9.
