No one wants to make their UFC debut on short notice, but don’t tell that to Rolando Dy.
With Chinese featherweight Guan Wang on the sidelines, second-generation fighter Rolando “The Incredible” Dy (8-4-0, 1NC) made the leap, signing with the Ultimate Fighting Championship to fight Alex Caceres (12-10) in the preliminary card of Fight Night 111 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The card will take place on Saturday, June 17.
“I really can’t believe I am fighting Caceres. I was just watching him fight [Urijah] Faber a few years ago. God is truly amazing,” the 25-year-old said in a Facebook post.
And unbelievable it truly is.
Just last April, Dy, the son of boxing legend Rolando Navarette, fought in India under the Brave CF banner. His bout against Nelson Paes, though, ended up in a no contest after an accidental head clash in the opening round.
Prior to that bout, Dy has strung together a three-fight winning streak, having had his hands raised in six of his last eight fights. His last two losses came at the hands of former Pacific Xtreme Combat Bantamweight champion Kyle Aguon via two razor-thin decisions.
His opponent is no slouch, however, as Caceres has fought the best of the best in the UFC.
Caceres, 28, is coming off two consecutive losses but his last taste of victory came in June of 2016, as he upset the highly-regarded UFC veteran Cole Miller.
Rolando Dy will join former Universal Reality Combat Challenge Flyweight champion CJ De Tomas (8-0) as the region’s sole representatives in the event. De Tomas, also a second-generation fighter, takes on Naoki Inoue (10-0) in a three-round flyweight bout.
