Ria Meneses has come a long way since starting with the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses back in the 76th season of the UAAP.
From not having a reliable spike to becoming one of the most intimidating net defenders in collegiate volleyball, Meneses has earned her spot in the 2017 25-woman National Team pool.
“Chamba,” the UST senior quipped.
“Happy, pero hindi ko siya ine-expect kasi sabi ko nung nag-tryout ako binigay ko best ko pero di ako nage-expect na makakasama ako sa training pool.”
The 6-foot-1 spiker will don the Philippines’ colors for the second time in her career, having campaigned in the AVC U23 in 2015.
“Kahit sinong player tanungin gustong-gusto namin maging part ng National Team kasi iba nire-represent dun — ‘yung country.
“Parang mas nakaka-inspire. Mas lalo kang magpupursige sa training,” expressed native of Bulacan, who had diligently attended the three-day tryouts held last January.
Vying for a spot against other experienced middle blockers like Aby Maraño, Jaja and Dindin Santiago, and Maika Ortiz, Meneses knows she will have a lot to prove.
“May kanya-kanya na silang pangalan and alam kong mas angat sila sa akin. Ako nandoon pa lang sa start,” the 21-year-old shared.
“Gagawin ko normal na ginagawa ko kasi start ko pa lang, sila papunta na sa ine-aim nila.”
