Resultay, Almazan power Air Force to WNBL Finals


Air Force-PSI completed an upset over Philippine Navy-Go for Gold, 66-56, to advance into the finals of the first season of the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) last Saturday at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Cindy Resultay and Amby Almazan carried the fourth-seed Lady Air Defenders to victory after scoring 18 points. They sweep the best-of-three semifinal series against the top-ranked Lady Sailors.

The Lady Air Defenders took Game 1 with a 68-49 win over the Lady Sailors last August 31 at the Botolan Peoples Plaza in Botolan, Zambales.

Army took control of the game after they built a 9-0 run — which included five straight points for Anna Buendia — to post a 51-40 lead midway in the fourth quarter.

In the other semifinal series, Cleon and Clyde forced a rubber match after beating Taguig, 68-61, in Game 2.

Jamie Alcoy scored 19 points and hit five threes . Meanwhile, Snow Penaranda had 17 points and 17 rebounds for the Lady Snipers to tie the series at 1-1.

Chack Cabinbin had 17 points, but fellow national team player Janine Pontejos was limited to nine for the Lady Generals.

Cleon and Clyde overcame a 13-point lead, with Alcoy scoring eight straight points including two triples, handing the Lady Snipers a 51-45 advantage late in the third.
