Coach Franz Pumaren and the Adamson University Soaring Falcons are looking to load up its backcourt.
Hubert Cani, 20, left the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles stable early this week to alleged academic deficiencies. The former UAAP Juniors Basketball Finals Most Valuable Player did not meet the necessary Quality Point Index (QPI) needed for retention according to reports.
However, a school official noted that Cani’s grades for his sophomore year did not result to expulsion and that he was just placed under academic probation. The official also added that Cani could have attended summer classes to pull-up his grades. Cani though decided to not push through with his stay in Ateneo.
One of the potential destinations for Cani is Adamson University. Soaring Falcons head coach Franz Pumaren did not deny that he and his staff are pursuing the floor general in saying, “let’s put it this way, it’s a never-ending recruitment on my part.”
Pumaren also added that in the current batch of Falcons, he only has two student-athletes that he recruited himself while the others are carry-overs from the past regime. “As we all know we only have two recruits that I have right now, [Nicholas] Paranada and [Jerrick] Ahanmisi,” the Adamson mentor added.
After spending a year in residency, the former NU Bullpup played sparingly for the Blue Eagles in accumulating a total court time of just 78.8 minutes in 13 outings. Moreover, he only started one game for the Katipunan cagers; ironically against the Adamson Falcons in the team’s second game of the season.
If this pushes through, Cani will serve another year in residency limbo before he can get a chance to suit-up for the Soaring Falcons in their UAAP Season 78 campaign.
