Consolacion moved to just a victory away from capturing the Pilipinas Super League Under-21 Aspirants Division Invitational Cup, clobbering Roxas, 80-66, in Game One of the Finals, Wednesday afternoon at the Manuel Roxas Sports Complex.
The Sarok Weavers took control of the match late in the second as they finished that stretch with a 12-3 flurry that put them in front, 46-37, at halftime. From there, it was all Consolacion as they dominated the rebounding battle, grabbing a whopping 64 rebounds to their opponent’s 35.
This led to plenty of points in the shaded lane—50 to be exact—which helped them lead by as much as 22 points, 80-58, with just 2:24 remaining in the game.
Mythical Five member Rojan Montemayor was a beast down low as he hauled down 20 boards to go with his 10 points.
John Dalumpines led the Sarok Weavers in scoring with 14 markers, while Rovello Robles came off the bench and put up 13. Matt Flores also gave Consolacion a huge lift from the bench as he flirted with a double-double, tallying eight points and 13 rebounds.
The Sarok Weavers bench actually scored the bulk of the team’s points as they produced 52. This helped offset the subpar performance of league MVP Gyle Montaño, who scored just two points, missing all but one of his 11 attempts from the field.
Eljohn Lacaya was the lone bright spot for Roxas as he pumped in 29 points, highlighted by six makes from beyond the arc. The team’s other two Mythical Five members—Jerry Rivera and Randolph Lacquio—were held in check, combining for just 18 points.
Consolacion will gun for the title in Game Two on Thursday afternoon.
