Roger Pogoy is thrilled to have a running partner like Mikey Williams as the Fil-Am guard shone on Friday night when TNT battled sister team Meralco.
The two-way specialist witnessed first-hand how the fourth overall pick decimated the Bolts on his way to finishing with a PBA career-high 27 points in nearly 35 minutes, powering the Tropang Giga to the 91-76 victory.
“Maganda kasama si Mikey,” he told Tiebreaker Times. “Kasi nakaka-atake siya, Dun kami nalilibre kasi nabe-break down niya ‘yung defender niya.”
Pogoy himself had benefited from Williams’ play. He went on to produce a conference-best 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field, alongside five rebounds, two steals, and an assist in a turnover-less outing.
“Dapat talaga lahat kami gagawa,” said the Far Eastern University product, a top candidate for last season’s BPC award, of his outing.
But beyond the on-court exploits of the former NBA G League veteran, what impresses Pogoy the most is Williams’ character.
“Si Mikey, hindi lang namin tinitingnan sa court. Maganda kasi ‘yung ugali rin. Mabait. Magaling makisama,” he described.
“Malaking factor sa’min yun.”
Friday’s big victory kept the Tropang Giga perfect after five games, keeping their spot atop the team standings firmly.
But as glad as he is with how the team has been playing thus far, Pogoy was quick to remind that there remain lots of battles ahead.
“Masaya kasi nanalo kami ngayon,” he said. “Pero wala pa, 5-0 pa lang ‘yan. Malayo pa.
“Marami pang malalakas na team na kakalabanin namin.”
