Philippines overpowers Sri Lanka, ends Asian Championship at fifth

Despite figuring in the consolation round, the Philippine Men’s National Baseball Team made sure to leave no stones unturned.

The Filipino batters peppered Sri Lanka, 7-1, to end their 2019 BFA Asian Championship campaign at fifth place, Saturday at Taichung Stadium.

It was another clinical win for the Filipinos, who defeated Hong Kong yesterday, 10-0.

The Philippine bullpen of Romeo Jasmin, Junmar Diarao, and Paulo Macasaet delivered the goods on the mound.

And with the defense clicking, the offense followed.

Jenald Pareja paced the team with three hits while Erwin Bosito and Ferdinand Liguayan had two hits each.

Diego Lozano, on the other hand, capped another solid national team campaign with a triple that punched in two runs.

Javi Macasaet, Jarus Inobio, and Jerome Yenson all had hits as well.

The team coached by Orlando Binarao and has a staff that includes Saki Bacarisas, Wilfredo Hidalgo, Joseph Orillana, and Keiji Katayama went 2-1 during the group stages.

Back in 2017, the Philippines ended its campaign with a 1-2 record.

Though tied with South Korea and China to end Group B of the continental meet, the Philippines lost the right to advance to the Super Round as it was behind in the team’s quality balance.
