PH Baseball ready to defend East Asia Cup in Pampanga


The Philippine National Baseball Team is gearing up to defend its title at the 2024 BFA XIV East Asia Cup, held from October 29 to November 3 at the Clark International Sports Complex in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

Anchoring the Philippines’ pitching rotation are Paulo Macasaet from Ateneo and Junmar Diarao from NU, both fresh off a stint with the Saga Indonesia Dreams in the Kyushu Asia League.

Their international experience bolsters the Philippines’ depth on the mound.

Joining them are NU’s MJ Carolino, UP coach Vladi Eguia, Adamson coach Romeo Jasmin, and NU’s Clarence Caasalan. Behind the plate, Adamson’s Steven Manaig, La Salle’s Renato Samuel, and UST’s John Vargas will be managing the pitching staff.

The infield defense is anchored by Ateneo great Aids Bernardo, a reliable presence for the national team for almost a decade already.

UST’s Mark Beronilla offers flexibility at first and third base, while Towson University’s Harper Sy covers second base.

UP’s Ian Mercado, Adamson great Jennald Pareja, Adamson’s Kyle Villafana, and NU’s Clarence Caasalan complete the basemen.

La Salle’s Lord Aragorn De Vera is positioned at shortstop. De Vera is coming off a long training in the US.

The outfield will see Adamson’s Erwin Bosito and NU’s Ferdinand Liguayan and Nigel Paule covering extensive ground.

Adamson’s John Matanguihan and Raymond Nerosa, along with Illinois State College’s Kyle Soberano, add depth to the outfield.

The Philippines, slotted in Group B, will face Indonesia on Tuesday, followed by Singapore on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Pool A features teams from Cambodia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Thailand.

The top two teams from each pool will advance to the super round, culminating in the championship game on Sunday.
