Defending champions United City enacted another five-star performance in the 2022-2023 Philippines Football League with a 5-0 win over Mendiola 1991, Sunday evening, at the Imus City Grandstand in Cavite.
Kenshiro Daniels scored two goals in the 5th and 69th minutes to increase his personal tally to three goals this campaign.
Ricardo Sendra gave coach Frank Muescan’s side a two-goal cushion in the 45th minute while Simen Lyngbo and Ivan Ouano scored a goal each in the 67th and 90th minutes respectively to make it another resounding win for United City.
“Actually, we retained our scoreline from Maharlika going to Mendiola,” said Muescan. “It’s really a physical game against us. I think the referee must also protect our players.”
“There are a lot of tackles, there are a lot of fouls but the referee must control beforehand because we’re heading towards good teams in the next couple of matches so I think this issue can be addressed.”
“We need to protect the players but anyway it’s really credit to all the players who always step up… They know who they are and they know who they can be.”
The result means that United City leads the standings with six points and a goal difference of +10. On the other hand, Mendiola 1991 is yet to tally a point this season after two straight losses.
United City returns to action against Dynamic Herb Cebu next Sunday at 7:00 PM. Mendiola shall take on Kaya-Iloilo earlier at 4:00 PM. The Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila will host both games.
