Petro Gazz vented its frustration on Hong Kong’s Hip Hing with a commanding 25-8, 25-12, 25-12 sweep to clinch the final quarterfinal berth in the 2025 AVC Women’s Champions League on Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.
Bouncing back from a 15-25, 16-25, 25-19, 20-25 defeat against Pool B leader Kaohsiung Taipower, the Angels secured a crossover quarterfinal match-up against Pool A top seed Beijing Baic Motor. The prestigious continental tournament is supported by federation partners Mikasa, Mizuno, and Grand Sport.
“I think this was a great game to find our rhythm as a team, to have fun, and enjoy each other’s play. We really just enjoyed every point, and that was the difference between today and yesterday. We could have given ourselves so much pressure, but we decided to really have fun,” said American import Gia Day, who led the team with 18 points, eight digs, and three receptions.
From the first set, the Angels took control and never looked back. After cruising to a dominant 25-8 opener, Petro Gazz refused to let Hip Hing gain any momentum throughout the one-hour, 13-minute match.
Eight different players from the reigning PVL champions contributed to the scoresheet in the game backed by local sponsors PLDT, MWell, Eagle Cement, Rebisco, Akari, Gameville, PNVF, PSC, Cignal, and The Look Group.
Hip Hing struggled to find their rhythm, managing only 12 attack points, two blocks, and a single ace. Notably, 19 of their total points came from errors committed by Petro Gazz.
MJ Phillips chipped in nine points on seven attacks, one block, and one ace, while Brooke Van Sickle added eight points in Petro Gazz’s breakthrough win in the tournament organized by Sports Vision.
Veteran Aiza Maizo-Pontillas contributed six points — all from attacks — while Remy Palma tallied six as well, with three coming from spikes and the other three from aces.
Sze Man Kwan and Tsz Ching Lam led the scoring for winless Hip Hing with three points each.
The quarterfinals begin Thursday, with PLDT taking on Kazakhstan’s Zhetysu at 4:00 PM, followed by the highly anticipated Petro Gazz vs. Beijing Baic Motor clash at 7:00 PM.
The other quarterfinal match-ups — Creamline vs. Nakhon Ratchasima and Kaohsiung Taipower vs. VTV Binh Dien Long An — are scheduled for Friday.
