PBA suspends ref Jeff Tantay after missed call in TNT vs. Meralco Game 5

The PBA Commissioner’s Office has taken immediate action after one of its referees missed a crucial call late in TNT’s eventual Game 5 victory against Meralco in the Season 50 Philippine Cup semifinals on Wednesday night.

Jeff Tantay has been suspended for failing to call a foul on Calvin Oftana against CJ Cansino during the dying seconds of the match in which the Tropang 5G escaped with the 99-96 decision at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Upon review by the technical committee, a foul should have been called on the star winger when he tried to block the shot of his sophomore counterpart with about 8.4 seconds remaining as the latter went for the go-ahead basket.

Tantay was the referee along the baseline. But no call was made, eventually prompting officials to hand out the punishment to the seasoned ref.

The Commissioner’s Office, though, is still weighing whether Tantay will be suspended for the rest of the conference or only for a shorter period.
