PBA requests KBL to release Abando for Asiad

Rhenz Abando could possibly still make it to Gilas Pilipinas Men for the 19th Asian Games.

The Philippine Basketball Association, who took charge of the responsibility in forming the men’s national basketball team for the continental meet, has already sent a letter of request to both the Korean Basketball League and Anyang JungKwanJang for Abando to play in the continental meet.

Jumpball reported the development.

“An official letter has arrived from the Philippine Basketball Association. Entry has not been confirmed yet.

“I understand that discussions are underway regarding whether to include players who play, not only Abando, but also in Japan. It is expected that a decision will be made around today (the 8th),” the report said quoting an Anyang JKJ official.

Tiebreaker Times sources have confirmed that Rhenz Abando is still in the country.

If cleared by his mother team, Abando will miss the start of the KBL Cup which commences on October 8.

Abando was a pivotal piece for Gilas during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, averaging 5.2 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game.

Though the report stated that the PBA also sent a request to the B.League, it will most likely be denied as all Filipino imports, except for new boys AJ Edu and RJ Abarrientos, are already in Japan preparing for the season opener on October 7.

Already confirmed for Gilas are Justin Brownlee, June Mar Fajardo, Angelo Kouame, Scottie Thompson, Japeth Aguilar, Roger Pogoy, Calvin Oftana, and Chris Newsome.
