‘Out-of-shape’ Valdez thanks teammates for the help

After nearly three years of non-stop volleyball leagues and off-court commitments, it was high time that three-time UAAP MVP Alyssa Valdez finally got some rest.

For the past month, Valdez has gone on a European tour for some rest and relaxation while also playing in a few exhibition matches in front of Filipinos abroad.

Recharged, Valdez made her debut for the Bali Pure Purest Water Defenders last Monday. Despite being a month removed from high-level competition, Valdez still managed to lead her squad to a five-set win over the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons.

Scoring a game-high 26 points, Valdez admitted that she is still far from her peak shape. “Super struggle also kasi first time kong magiging teammates yung iba. Iba rin yung feeling na nag-tretraining ka everyday to prepare for a match,” Valdez stressed.

She credits her teammates for their quick adjustment and invaluable help in her first match back.

“Tinulungan ako ng teammates ko makuha tung points. But it’s hard din talaga kapag dikitan and wala ka pa sa kundisyon dahil nawala nga ako or a month. Kaya sobrang thankful ko for my teammates kasi napunan nila yung mga kulang ko to lift up the team,” Valdez .furthered

Reigning NCAA MVP Grethcel Soltones was a huge boost for the Water Defenders, pitching in 15 markers, while Amy Ahomiro contributed 10 points. Setter Jem Ferrer was also splendid, tossing 50 excellent sets.

“It’s really nice din that I get to play with a lot of former teammates. Now, it’s all about getting into shape and growing as a team,” Valdez added.

More than anything, Valdez brings her quiet yet infectious confidence, says playing coach Charo Soriano.

“Alyssa brings so much confidence for herself but also for her teammates. Yung confidence ni Alyssa nakakahawa – she brings you up also,” Soriano closed.
