Dennis Orcollo, Carlo Biado, Johann Chua, and Rodrigo Geronimo punched their respective tickets to the 2021 US Open 9-Ball Championship’s round of 16 held at the Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Friday (Manila time).
Orcollo, the reigning Southeast Asian Games champion in men’s 10-ball, defeated Oliver Szolnoki of Hungary, 11-7.
Chua and Biado, bronze medalists in the men’s 9-ball pool doubles of the regional meet back in 2019, also advanced albeit in different manner.
Chua bested Mieszko Fortunski of Poland, 11-7, while Biado had to defeat Filipino Jeff De Luna, 11-6, and Scottish Jayson Shaw, 11-8, in the loser’s bracket to punch his ticket to the next round.
For his part, Geronimo bounced back from a 2-11 defeat at the hands of Austrian Max Lechner by gunning down Dutch Neils Feijen, 11-6.
Composing rest of the last 16 of this tournament that has a $300,000 prize pool, Aloysius Yapp, Shane Van Boening, Denis Grabe, Max Lechner, Mieszko Fortuński, Mario He, John Morra, David Alcaide, Fedor Gorst, Marco Teutscher, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, and Naoyuki Oi.
Orcollo takes on He, Chua will face Morra, Geronimo squares off against Grabe, and Biado will face Alcalde in the next round.
Filipinos that had already been eliminated from the tourney are Roland Garcia, Jeff Ignacio, James Aranes, Warren Kiamco, Roberto Gomez, Dan Segui, and Daniel Dagotdot.
