Javee Mocon snaps out of funk as San Beda cruises past Mapua


The defending champions crush another one.

Behind a huge double-double outing by Javee Mocon, the San Beda University Red Lions sent the Mapua University Cardinals crashing back down with a 88-70 victory, Friday afternoon at the FIloil Flying V Centre.

“Again, the boys really played well so that well be ready for our big game against Letran on Friday,” said San Beda head coach Boyet Fernandez.

With the win, San Beda kept pace with league-leaders Lyceum Pirates with a 4-0 slate. Mapua, who are coming off a win over the Arellano Chiefs last Tuesday, dropped to 2-3.

After a steady start, Mocon came alive with 22 points and 16 rebounds — doubling his averages of 11.0 points and 8.7 rebounds.

“Javee played well today,” added Fernandez.

San Beda though had to overcome a slow second quarter that sliced their lead to just four in come halftime.

“We just have to be consistent, learn to be consistent playing the game,” lamented Fernandez.

Mocon though took it upon himself to tow the Red Lions in the third frame, scoring 12 points. Donald Tankoua then powered San Beda’s finishing touches as the Red Lions led by as much as 18 points.

Tankoua added 17 points and seven rebounds. Robert Bolick, on the other hand, steered the wheel, dishing out eight of San Beda’s season-high 18 dimes, to go along with 11 points.

Rookie Warren Bonifacio paced Mapua with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Cedric Pelayo added 15 markers.

San Beda will next face arch-rivals Letran Knights on Friday, August 10. Mapua, on the other hand, takes on the San Sebastian Golden Stags on Tuesday.
